Cleanse · Hydrate · Moisturize — the three-step framework behind every Bee Naturals routine

What Is CHM?

CHM stands for Cleanse · Hydrate · Moisturize — a three-step skincare framework that forms the foundation of every Bee Naturals routine. Whether you're brand-new to skincare or an advanced professional, CHM is always the starting point.

CHM isn't a product line — it's a protocol. It teaches you how to care for your skin in the correct order, with products matched to your specific skin type and concerns. Every Bee Naturals facial product maps to one of these three steps.

C
Cleanse
Remove & Purify
H
Hydrate
Quench & Nourish
M
Moisturize
Seal & Protect
Key Principle: Every new client starts with CHM. Master these three steps before adding exfoliants, targeted actives, or advanced protocols.

Why CHM Works

The Moisture Barrier

Your skin's outermost layer — the stratum corneum — acts as both a shield against environmental aggressors and a water-retention system. It consists of flattened skin cells (corneocytes) held together by a lipid matrix of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids. Think of it as a brick wall: the cells are bricks, the lipids are mortar.

When this barrier is healthy, the skin stays hydrated, calm, and resilient. When it's damaged — by harsh cleansers, over-exfoliation, or environmental stress — the skin loses water rapidly (a process called transepidermal water loss, or TEWL), causing dryness, sensitivity, dullness, and premature aging.

CHM is designed to support and restore this barrier at every step:

  • Cleanse removes impurities without stripping the lipid matrix
  • Hydrate delivers water and water-binding molecules directly into the skin
  • Moisturize seals that water in with emollients and occlusives, mimicking the natural barrier

Hydration vs. Moisturization

These two words are often used interchangeably, but they describe different biological processes:

HydrationMoisturization
DefinitionAdding water to skin cellsPreventing water loss from the skin
MechanismHumectants attract and bind waterEmollients smooth; occlusives seal
Key IngredientsHyaluronic acid, glycerin, aloe, sodium PCASqualane, shea butter, ceramides, beeswax
CHM StepHM
Without the OtherSkin absorbs water but loses it immediatelySkin is sealed but has no water to retain
This is why both steps are essential. Hydration without moisturization is like filling a bucket with holes. Moisturization without hydration locks in dryness.

The Three CHM Steps

C Step 1 — Cleanse

Cleansing removes dirt, oil, makeup, sunscreen, and environmental pollution while preserving the skin's natural protective barrier. The right cleanser dissolves impurities without over-stripping.

The single most common skincare error is using the wrong cleanser. A cleanser that's too harsh for your skin type damages the barrier; one that's too mild doesn't clean effectively.

H Step 2 — Hydrate

The Hydrate step delivers water and water-binding molecules directly into the skin while it's still damp from cleansing. This is the most time-sensitive step — hydrators must be applied to damp skin within 60 seconds of cleansing.

The H step typically involves a toner (misted on) followed by a serum (pressed in). Toners add a first wave of hydration; serums deliver concentrated actives.

M Step 3 — Moisturize

Moisturizing seals everything in. Emollients smooth the skin surface; occlusives create a breathable barrier that prevents transepidermal water loss. Apply within 2–3 minutes of your hydrating step — before the skin dries.

CHM by Skin Type

These are starter routines — your CHM foundation. Each is designed for morning and evening use. Master this for 4–6 weeks before adding exfoliants or targeted actives.

Normal Skin — CHM Foundation

AM Routine

  1. C Rose Geranium Foaming Cleanser
  2. H Hydrating Facial Freshener misted on → Hyaluronic Serum
  3. M Queen Bee Facial Nectar

PM Routine

  1. C Rose Geranium Foaming Cleanser, or alternate with Cleansing Milk
  2. H Hydrating Facial Freshener → Hyaluronic Serum
  3. M Queen Bee Facial Nectar — or Crème Luxe if naturally dry
Expected Results: Skin should feel immediately comfortable. Noticeable glow improvement within 1–2 weeks as hydration levels normalize.
Dry / Very Dry Skin — CHM Foundation

AM Routine

  1. C Queen Bee Facial Cleansing Milk — do NOT use foaming cleansers on dry skin
  2. H Calming Facial Tonic misted on → Hyaluronic Serum
  3. M Crème Luxe Intense Moisture

PM Routine

  1. C Queen Bee Cleansing Crème — solid coconut cream; deeply nourishing
  2. H Calming Facial Tonic → Hyaluronic Serum
  3. M Crème Luxe Intense Moisture
Important: If skin feels tight even after Crème Luxe — the issue is likely a damaged moisture barrier, not insufficient product. See the Restore System for barrier repair.
Expected Results: Flaking and tightness should diminish within 3–5 days. Lasting suppleness builds over 2–4 weeks as the barrier restores.
Oily / Acne-Prone Skin — CHM Foundation

AM Routine

  1. C Foaming Face Wash
  2. H Oil-Free Moisturizing Facial Serum — 6% niacinamide controls oil while hydrating
  3. M Oil-Free Day Crème

PM Routine

  1. C Foaming Face Wash, or alternate with Blemish/Acne Cleansing Bar
  2. H Oil-Free Moisturizing Facial Serum
  3. M Oil-Free Night Repair Crème
Important: Do NOT skip the moisturizer for oily skin. Stripping the skin of all oil triggers a rebound response — the skin overproduces sebum to compensate, worsening oiliness and breakouts.
Expected Results: Gradual oil reduction over 4–6 weeks. Niacinamide builds cumulative benefits over time.
Sensitive / Rosacea-Prone Skin — CHM Foundation

AM Routine

  1. C Micellar Cleansing Water — spritz, wipe gently with soft cloth (no rinsing required)
  2. H Calming Facial Tonic misted on, then Hyaluronic Serum
  3. M Clean & Gentle Facial Moisturizer

PM Routine

  1. C Queen Bee Facial Cleansing Milk — gentle washcloth removal
  2. H Calming Facial Tonic + Hyaluronic Serum
  3. M Clean & Gentle Facial Moisturizer, or Crème Luxe if also very dry
All products in this routine are fragrance-free. Do not substitute scented products — fragrance is the #1 cause of skincare sensitivities and allergies.
Expected Results: Reduced redness and reactivity within 1–2 weeks.
Combination Skin — CHM Foundation

AM Routine

  1. C Rose Geranium Foaming Cleanser — gentle enough for all zones
  2. H Oil-Free Moisturizing Facial Serum all over; concentrate on dry cheek areas
  3. M Rose Geranium Moisture Veil — light layer; may skip T-zone if very oily

PM Routine

  1. C Rose Geranium Foaming Cleanser, or alternate with Cleansing Milk on dry days
  2. H Oil-Free Moisturizing Facial Serum
  3. M Oil-Free Night Repair Crème
Expected Results: T-zone oil normalization within 3–4 weeks. Dry areas nourished without new breakouts.

Layering Logic

Proper layering allows every product to work at its full potential. Apply in this order:

C Cleanse
Skin is damp
H Toner / Facial Tonic — mist onto damp skin
H Treatment Serum(s) — lightest first; 30–60 sec between layers
Still slightly damp — within 2–3 minutes
M Moisturizer / Cream — seals everything in
AM only
Targeted Treatments / Oils — over moisturizer if heavier
Tinted Primer / SPF — always the final AM step

Critical Rules

  1. Water before oil: Water-based products always go before oil-based products. Water cannot penetrate an oil barrier.
  2. Thin to thick: Layer from lightest to heaviest texture — serums before creams before oils before balms.
  3. Timing is everything: Hydrators must go on damp skin. Moisturizer must follow within 3 minutes. If you wait until your face is dry, you are locking in dehydration.
  4. AM vitamin C goes early: Ultra AA Serum is applied at the hydration step in the morning, before other serums. Vitamin C synergizes with sunscreen.
  5. AHAs and BHAs go PM: Products containing glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, or mandelic acid should generally be used at night. They increase photosensitivity.
  6. Retinol goes PM only: Any retinol-containing product is a nighttime product. Always wear SPF the following morning.
  7. Less is more: A pea-sized amount of most serums and creams is sufficient. Over-application wastes product and can create pilling or clogged pores.

Advanced Systems — Beyond Basic CHM

Once you've mastered CHM for 4–8 weeks, targeted systems can be introduced to address specific concerns. Each system builds upon CHM — none replace it.

E CEHM — Cleanse · Exfoliate · Hydrate · Moisturize

The four-step expansion of CHM that adds a dedicated exfoliation step between cleansing and hydrating. Not recommended until CHM habits are well established (minimum 4–6 weeks).

Why exfoliate? Dead skin cells accumulate on the surface, dulling the complexion, clogging pores, trapping oil, and blocking hydrator absorption. Controlled exfoliation reveals fresher, more radiant skin.

The Restore System — Barrier Repair CHM

A specialized CHM variant using three synergistic products formulated for compromised skin barriers. Sold as a bundled three-step system.

When to Use

  • Chronically dry skin that doesn't respond to regular moisturizers
  • Post-procedure recovery (after professional peels, retinoid overuse, laser treatments)
  • Skin that feels raw, reactive, or perpetually tight
  • Clients who say they "can never put on enough moisturizer"

The Three Products

StepProductKey Ingredients
CRestore I – Cleanse with Beta GlucanLactylates, oat beta-glucan, panthenol, allantoin, fruit acids, HA
HRestore II – Hydrate Ceramide Enriched SerumCeramides 1/3/6II, phospholipids, MAP Vitamin C, panthenol, caffeine
MRestore III – Moisturize CoQ-10 Serum w/ RetinolCoQ-10, retinol, vitamins E and C

How the System Works

  • Restore I cleanses gently while depositing barrier-building lactylates and skin-calming oat beta-glucan
  • Restore II delivers the exact lipid components (ceramides, phospholipids) that make up the skin's "mortar" layer, physically rebuilding the barrier
  • Restore III seals with CoQ-10 for cellular protection and retinol for renewal — transforming repair into regeneration

Together, the three products deliver approximately 45 active ingredients designed to work in concert.

Routine

AM & PM:

  1. C Restore I: Massage onto damp skin; remove with warm washcloth. May be left on 10–15 min as a treatment mask.
  2. H Calming Tonic misted on → Restore II: 4–5 drops on very damp skin.
  3. M Restore III: 3–5 drops, massage gently. (AM: follow with Tinted Facial Primer for protection.)

Phases of Use

  • Repair Phase: Twice daily for 1 week. Expect dramatic improvement.
  • Maintenance Phase: Reduce to once daily or every other day. Transition to regular CHM products at secondary steps.
Restore III contains retinol — daily SPF is required. Not recommended during pregnancy. If skin is severely sensitized, begin retinol very slowly.
Value: The complete system is available as a set for $77.96 — approximately 45 active ingredients. Comparable department-store barrier-repair products retail for $180+ each.

Advanced Routines — Full Protocols by Concern

Morning vs. Evening Routines

AM and PM routines serve fundamentally different biological functions. Understanding the difference helps choose the right products for each window.

☀ AM Goals

  • Protect from UV, pollution, and environmental oxidative stress
  • Prepare the skin for the day (barrier intact, comfortable under makeup)
  • Deliver antioxidants to synergize with sunscreen

☾ PM Goals

  • Remove the day's SPF, makeup, pollution, and sebum
  • Repair & renew — skin cell mitosis peaks between 11 PM and midnight
  • Deliver actives (acids, retinol) that are photosensitizing or work best at rest

Seasonal & Situational Adjustments

Winter Adjustments

Colder temperatures, low humidity, and indoor heating dramatically increase transepidermal water loss. Skin that is comfortable in summer may become tight, flaky, and reactive in winter.

  • Cleanser: Switch from foam to cream or milk cleansers; limit foaming to once daily
  • Hydration: Add a second hydrating serum layer or switch to Hyaluronic Serum as a daily staple
  • Moisturizer: Move up one weight category (e.g., Moisture Veil → Queen Bee Nectar; Oil-Free Day Crème → Crème Luxe)
  • PM boost: Layer Queen Bee Facial Nectar under your normal PM moisturizer for added richness
  • If barrier is compromised: Transition to the Restore System temporarily

Summer Adjustments

Heat, humidity, and increased sebum production call for lighter formulations.

  • Cleanser: Foaming cleansers are appropriate for combination skin in summer
  • Moisturizer: Move down one weight category (e.g., Crème Luxe → Oil-Free Day Crème; Nectar → Moisture Veil)
  • Hydration: Focus on lighter hydrating serums; misting toners feel refreshing in heat
  • SPF: Do not reduce SPF use — summer UV index is higher

Travel / High-Altitude Adjustments

  • Airplane cabins and high altitudes accelerate dehydration dramatically
  • Increase hydration: carry Calming Tonic as a mist; apply Hyaluronic Serum more frequently
  • Avoid new products during travel to minimize reaction risk
  • Consider mini-sizes: Rose Geranium Cleanser, Calming Tonic, Hyaluronic Serum, and Clean & Gentle Moisturizer in travel sizes cover the full CHM system

Weekly Intensive Treatments

Periodic treatments layered onto any daily routine to accelerate or deepen results.

  1. Get CHM right before adding anything else. Every new client starts here. Do not introduce exfoliants or targeted actives until CHM is established, results are visible, and trust is built.
  2. Match the cleanser to the skin type. A poorly matched cleanser undermines everything that follows. This is the single most common error in skincare routines.
  3. Always apply hydrators to damp skin. The Hydrate step only works if the skin is still damp. Never let skin dry completely before applying your toner or serum.
  4. Apply moisturizer within 2–3 minutes of hydrating. This window is when the skin has absorbed surface water. Waiting longer means locking in dryness.
  5. AHA, BHA, and retinol require daily SPF — no exceptions. Any product that increases cell turnover exposes fresh, delicate skin to UV damage.
  6. Start low, go slow with actives. Introduce acids and retinol gradually. Over-drying and over-exfoliation trigger rebound effects that set clients back weeks.
  7. Less product is almost always better. A pea-sized amount is typically sufficient. Over-application wastes product, risks pilling, and can clog pores.

Fragrance Sensitivity

Fragrance is the number-one cause of skincare sensitivities and allergic reactions. Bee Naturals offers fragrance-free options in every CHM category. For facial routines — especially for sensitive, rosacea-prone, or reactive skin — always default to fragrance-free options.

  • Clarifying Facial Wash
  • Anti-Aging Blemish Crème

Moisture Barrier Awareness

A damaged moisture barrier is the root cause of many persistent complaints — chronic dryness, sensitivity, rough texture, and dullness. If you "can never put on enough moisturizer," the answer is almost never a heavier cream. It is barrier repair — the Restore System.

Signs of a damaged barrier:

  • Skin feels tight or uncomfortable even after moisturizing
  • Formerly tolerated products suddenly cause stinging or redness
  • Skin looks dull, rough, or flaky despite consistent moisturizing
  • Redness and sensitivity appeared after a period of over-exfoliation or product overuse
