Protocol

Sensitive Skin Shield

A completely fragrance-free, minimal-active protocol for reactive, rosacea-prone, or contact-sensitive skin — designed to calm, protect, and gradually rebuild resilience without triggering flares.

Reactive Skin Rosacea Redness & Flushing Fragrance Sensitivity

Reactive Skin vs. Sensitive Skin

These two terms are often used interchangeably — but they describe different conditions that require different approaches.

ConditionDefinitionTrigger PatternProtocol Focus
Sensitive Skin Structural — thinner skin, more nerve endings, less protective lipid layer Reacts to many products broadly; always present Barrier building; fragrance-free; fewer products
Reactive Skin Functional — normal structure but overreacts to specific triggers Specific triggers: heat, fragrance, certain actives, stress Identify and remove triggers; anti-inflammatory actives
Rosacea Chronic vascular condition — neurovascular dysregulation Flushing triggers: heat, alcohol, spice, UV, stress Anti-redness actives; mineral SPF; avoid vasodilators

The Sensitive Skin Shield protocol addresses all three — it is designed to be the safest, most tolerable routine possible while still providing effective barrier support and gentle resurfacing over time.

The Protocol

Unlike other protocols in this series, the Sensitive Skin Shield uses the same routine morning and evening — consistent, gentle, predictable. Exfoliation is optional and introduced very slowly when skin is ready.

C1
Cleanse — Fragrance-Free, No-Rinse Option
The gentlest possible cleanse — no surfactants, no rinse required, no fragrance. Micellar technology removes makeup, SPF, and sebum with zero stripping or friction. Saturate a cotton pad, press gently across face, and allow to dry. Can also be used as a rinse-off cleanser if preferred.
AM + PM · Daily
H2
Hydrate — Calming Tonic
100% fragrance-free, rosacea-safe formulation. Apply to damp skin by patting gently with palms — never cotton pads on sensitized skin (friction). Key actives: aloe vera, allantoin, and centella asiatica immediately begin reducing inflammation while delivering foundational hydration.
AM + PM · Apply to damp skin
H3
Hydrate — Ceramide + HA Serum
Multi-weight hyaluronic acid + ceramides + peptides delivers deep hydration, barrier lipid restoration, and gentle firming. Allow the Calming Tonic to absorb 30 seconds before applying. Press into skin — no rubbing.
AM + PM
M4
Moisturize — Fragrance-Free
Formulated specifically for fragrance-sensitive skin. Seals the hydration and ceramide layers while providing a protective occlusive seal. Apply within 2–3 minutes of the serum while skin is still slightly damp.
AM + PM
OptionalExtra
Gentle Resurfacing — When Skin Is Ready (1×/week max)
Products containing Gluconolactone (PHA) — 1× per week PM only
PHAs (polyhydroxy acids) are the gentlest exfoliating class — large molecules that don't penetrate deeply, hydrate as they resurface, and are safe for rosacea-prone skin. Introduce only after 4+ weeks of the base protocol and barrier is confirmed stable. Never on the same week as any other active.
Optional · PM only · 1×/week maximum · After 4 weeks

The Fragrance Question

Why Bee Naturals Formulates Fragrance-Free Options

Fragrance — including natural essential oils — is the most common cause of cosmetic allergic contact dermatitis. The EU Cosmetics Regulation requires disclosure of 26 specific fragrance allergens above threshold concentrations. Bee Naturals offers a complete fragrance-free pathway through the Sensitive Skin Shield protocol so that no customer is excluded from effective skincare due to fragrance sensitivity.

"As a nurse, I believe everyone deserves access to effective skincare regardless of sensitivities. That's why we formulated fragrance-free versions of every core step — not as an afterthought, but as a primary part of the line."
— Barbara Chappuis, RN · Founder, Bee Naturals

Patch Test Protocol

For reactive or sensitized skin, patch testing new products before full application is strongly recommended. Follow this procedure:

Step-by-Step Patch Test
  • Apply a small amount of the new product to the inner arm or behind the ear
  • Leave for 24 hours without washing the area
  • Check at 24 hours for redness, itching, swelling, or bumps
  • If no reaction: repeat for a second 24-hour period
  • If no reaction after 48 hours total: safe to introduce to face
  • Introduce one new product at a time, minimum 5 days apart

Safe vs. Avoid List

For sensitive, reactive, and rosacea skin, not all actives are created equal. This reference guides ingredient selection:

IngredientStatus for Sensitive SkinNotes
Aloe BarbadensisSafe ✓Foundational soothing; anti-inflammatory
AllantoinSafe ✓Gentle healing; tolerated by all skin types
Beta Glucan (Oat)Safe ✓Barrier support; calming; anti-redness
Centella AsiaticaSafe ✓Wound healing; anti-inflammatory; collagen support
Ceramides (NP, EOP, AP)Safe ✓Barrier restoration; essential for sensitive skin
GlycerinSafe ✓Foundational humectant; universally tolerated
Panthenol (B5)Safe ✓Soothing; conditioning; healing
Hyaluronic Acid (LMW)Caution ⚠LMW HA can penetrate and cause irritation in some very reactive skin; prefer HMW HA
AHAs (glycolic, lactic)Avoid ✗Can trigger flushing, barrier disruption in sensitive/rosacea skin
Retinol / RetinoidsAvoid ✗Until barrier is established and stable
Pure Ascorbic Acid (Vit. C)Avoid ✗Low pH can trigger irritation; use MAP Vitamin C instead
Fragrance / Essential OilsAvoid ✗Primary cosmetic allergen; avoid all forms
Alcohol Denat.Avoid ✗Strips barrier; triggers vasodilation in rosacea

Rosacea — Targeted Support

Rosacea is a chronic vascular condition with multiple subtypes. This protocol is safe for all rosacea subtypes (Erythematotelangiectatic, Papulopustular, Phymatous) — but the following additional guidance applies:

Anti-Redness Actives in This Protocol
  • Copper Chlorophyllin — botanical chlorophyll derivative that neutralizes facial redness at the color level
  • Feverfew (Tanacetum Parthenium) — potent anti-inflammatory, reduces flushing response
  • Licorice Extract — calms and evens redness; gentle melanin inhibitor
  • Centella Asiatica — supports capillary strength, reduces chronic redness

For rosacea skin, also avoid the following known triggers: hot showers, spicy foods, alcohol, intense exercise (temporarily), and any product with Niacinamide above 10% (can cause temporary flushing at high concentrations).

Key Ingredients

Centella Asiatica (Cica)
